A Political Movement Designated as a Cult by the Same Framework That Produced a Federal Conviction

The BITE Model is a checklist. It was written by Steven Hassan, a former Unification Church member who has spent four decades converting his own exit experience into a designation framework. It has no statutory basis and no adversarial test behind it. What it has is reach: it supplied the analytical framework of a federal forced labor prosecution, though its author never testified in it, and it was applied — by the same author, in the same terms — to a 74-million-person political movement.

This page collects the MAGA designation record in one place: what was designated, how the checklist was applied to ordinary political behavior, how the framework entered Congress, and how the defector roster was assembled. Every item below is a published statement, an official proceeding, or a document on the record.

Rep. Jamie Raskin endorsed The Cult of Trump on publication, replied to Hassan directly on X in January 2022 (“We need your expertise and wisdom”), attended a fundraiser with him in April 2022, confirmed in September 2023 that his Democracy Summer program featured cult deprogrammers including Hassan, and twice placed Unification Church exit imagery — “selling flowers at the airport” — into the congressional record.

The dissertation Hassan describes is the same document that states, on page 108: “The authoritarian control construct can be utilized on a case-by-case basis and hopefully can help establish a new legal precedent.”

The OneTaste trial rested on nine witnesses out of a participant pool exceeding 35,000, testifying that they felt they could not leave. The equivalent roster for a political movement is already assembled and already fluent in the vocabulary:

• Michael Cohen, the President’s attorney for twelve years, describing having been in “The Cult of Trump” and becoming “mesmerized.”
• Lev Parnas, describing himself as “waking up from a cult” and the President as a “cult leader.”
• Omarosa Manigault Newman: “I’ve escaped from the cult of Trumpworld. I’m free.”
• Anthony Scaramucci: “the hostages have Stockholm Syndrome. @realDonaldTrump as rev Jim Jones.”
• George Conway, who said his own wife was “in a cult,” then wrote the foreword to the book’s September 2024 re-release.
• Alva Johnson, the 2016 campaign’s Director of Outreach and Coalitions, describing “cult-building tactics” inside the campaign.
• Multiple January 6 defendants attributing their own conduct to psychological coercion.

Under the coercive-control theory, testimony like this is not commentary. It is the evidentiary core — subjective perception of control, offered in place of force, fraud, or restraint.

Before 2025, calling a political movement a cult was rhetoric. After 2025 it names a framework that has produced a nine-year federal sentence without any allegation of physical restraint. The theory does not distinguish between a wellness organization, a congregation, a health movement, and a political coalition. It asks only whether participants can later be described as having been under influence.

The vocabulary was tested on a small organization. It is already written down for a movement of 74 million people.
